How to Winterize a Motorcycle

Protect your bike through the off-season with a step-by-step winterization guide — oil, fuel, battery, tires, chain, and storage.

Why winterizing matters

Motorcycles are small, exposed machines. When they sit, fuel turns to varnish, batteries sulfate, oil becomes acidic, and moisture attacks every metal surface. A few hours of winter prep saves hundreds or thousands of dollars in spring repairs and keeps your bike ready to ride when the weather turns.

What you'll need

  • Fuel stabilizer
  • Fresh oil and filter
  • Chain cleaner/lube (if applicable)
  • Smart battery maintainer
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Breathable cover
  • Rags or intake/exhaust plugs

Carbureted vs. fuel-injected bikes

Carbureted motorcycles need the float bowls drained and sometimes run dry to prevent varnish. Fuel-injected bikes rely on the fuel pump and stabilizer, but modern ethanol fuel still degrades quickly. If you're unsure about your specific model, a 30-minute Quick Fix call will cover the exact steps for your year, make, and model.

Winterize your motorcycle in 8 steps

  1. 01

    Clean the bike thoroughly

Wash off dirt, salt, and bugs. Dry completely and wax painted surfaces to protect the finish. Clean and lubricate the chain if your bike has one.

  2. 02

    Change the oil and filter

Old oil holds acids and contaminants that can etch internals over months of storage. Change the oil and filter before parking the bike for the season.

  3. 03

    Stabilize the fuel

Fill the tank to at least 90% and add a quality fuel stabilizer. Run the engine 5–10 minutes so the treated fuel circulates through the entire fuel system.

  4. 04

    Protect the battery

Remove the battery and store it on a maintainer in a cool, dry location. If you can't remove it, a Battery Tender connected to the terminals works too.

  5. 05

    Prepare the tires and suspension

Inflate tires to the high end of the recommended range. Use a motorcycle stand or paddock stand to take weight off the tires if possible. Otherwise, roll the bike a few inches every few weeks.

  6. 06

    Cover the intake and exhaust

Stuff a clean rag or intake plug in the airbox and exhaust outlet to keep moisture and rodents out. Leave a note on the handlebars so you remember to remove them in spring.

  7. 07

    Use a breathable cover

A quality breathable cover prevents condensation while keeping dust off. Avoid plastic tarps that trap moisture against the bike.

  8. 08

Store it in a dry, secure place

Ideal storage is a garage or shed with stable temperature and low humidity. A concrete floor can wick moisture, so a mat or carpet under the tires helps.

FAQ

Do I need to winterize a motorcycle?
Yes, especially if it will sit unused for more than 30 days or through freezing temperatures. Fuel goes stale, batteries drain, tires flat-spot, and condensation can rust internal parts. A proper winterization protects your investment and makes spring start-up easy.
Can you help me winterize my motorcycle over video?
Yes. A ProWrench Live Quick Fix video call covers your specific bike, climate, and storage situation so you don't miss steps like valve-cover fogging, chain care, or fuel-injection quirks.
Should I store a motorcycle with a full or empty tank?
Fill the tank nearly full and add fuel stabilizer. A full tank leaves less room for condensation. Run the engine for a few minutes so treated fuel reaches the injectors or carburetors.
How do I keep the battery alive over winter?
Remove the battery, clean the terminals, and connect it to a smart maintainer/trickle charger in a dry place. A tender keeps the battery topped off without overcharging.
What about spring start-up?
Check tire pressure, reinstall the battery, inspect fluids, and do a slow visual inspection before starting. If it sat with stabilizer, fresh fuel may help. We can walk you through a full de-winterization on a video call.
